Essential Horse Show Equipment You Need for an A-Rated show

Preparing for your first A-rated hunter jumper horse show can feel overwhelming. With the right equipment, you can focus on performing your best and making a great impression. Here's a checklist of everything you'll need to step into the ring confidently.

Welcome to Cross Creek Farm Equestrian Center

1. Show-Approved Riding Clothes

Your attire must meet show standards, and our trainers know the ins and outs of these rules to ensure you're always competition-ready. Invest in high-quality breeches (tan or beige), a fitted show shirt, and a classic show jacket. For hunter classes, a conservative jacket in navy or black is ideal. You can explore slightly bolder colors for jumpers but always confirm the current USHJA rules. Don't forget polished, tall black leather boots with proper zippers. If you require assistance in obtaining show-regulated attire, our trainers are here to guide you every step of the way.

2. Helmet That Meets Safety Standards

Wearing a certified helmet is non-negotiable. Your helmet should meet ASTM/SEI standards for safety. To complement your attire, choose a classic black or dark gray design. Always ensure the fit is secure without being too tight.

3. Horse Tack in Excellent Condition

Your tack reflects your professionalism. A well-maintained bridle with a hunter-style noseband is essential for hunters. Jumper horses might require a figure-eight or similar options for precision control. Keep saddles polished and girths clean. Check for wear and tear before heading to the show.

4. Fitting Saddle Pad

For hunters, use a clean white or shaped fitted pad that doesn't overpower your saddle. Jumpers may use square pads but should remain white or have minimal trim for a polished look. Always check that your pad fits securely without bunching.

5. Braiding Materials for Presentation

You'll need your horse's mane braided neatly if you're competing in hunters. This not only respects hunter traditions but also adds to your presence. Stock up on braiding yarn, bands, and a proper comb. If braiding isn't your strong suit, hire a professional groom ahead of show day.

6. Essential Grooming Supplies

A well-groomed horse stands out. Pack quality brushes, hoof polish, mane detanglers, and fly spray. You might need to perform touch-ups around the face or legs, so bring clippers. Don't forget cleaning products to keep legs, face, and coats gleaming under the show ring lights.

7. Grooming Box

A well-organized grooming box or show trunk helps you stay efficient at the horse show. Store all your horse care essentials in one place, including rags, hoof picks, and extra tack parts. This saves time and reduces stress at a busy competition barn.

8. Legal Bits

Your bit choice may vary depending on the class you're riding in. Keep a few extra legal bits on hand if you need to adjust based on your horse's responsiveness. Ensure your bit is legal. Our trainers, Diane and Nick, are excellent resources on what bit you should be competing in.

9. Competitive Show Jumping Accessories

Pack extra protective boots or polo wraps for your horse's legs if you're entering jumper classes. These provide additional support during tighter turns and jumps. Double-check that all accessories meet USHJA rules to avoid penalties.

10. Access to Quality Boarding Facilities

While not physical horse show equipment, staging your horse at a top-tier boarding facility like Cross Creek Farm before the event ensures readiness. Proper boarding facilities provide pre-show support, including access to trainers and specialized care. This minimizes stress and maximizes your competitive edge.

11. Reliable Hunter Jumper Trainer

Your preparation doesn't stop at gear; having a trusted hunter jumper trainer ensures you—and your horse—are ready for show-time challenges. Trainers guide you through pre-show exercises and help refine your riding during critical practice sessions.

12. Backup Equipment

Always bring spares. Extra reins, stirrup leathers, and girths can be lifesavers if something breaks unexpectedly. Doesn't a simple leather hole punch help make adjustments mid-show?

Preparing for your first A-rated horse show is exciting but can be nerve-wracking. Proper horse show equipment and a structured approach prepare you for a successful experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

In the ring, horses commonly wear protective boots such as open-front boots for jumping, brushing boots for flatwork, and bell boots to shield the hooves and coronet bands. The type of boot depends on the discipline, with options designed to prevent interference injuries (in which the horse strikes one leg with another) and to support tendons.

Hunter classes typically use close contact saddles, designed for a forward seat and minimal interference with the horse’s movement. Jumper saddles are similar but offer more forward flaps and knee support for tight turns and fast jumps. Dressage saddles have a deeper seat and longer flaps to support a balanced, upright position and precise cues.

Successful horse training depends on the right environment. At Cross Creek Malibu Farm, our state-of-the-art arenas and professional training programs provide an optimal setting for hunter/jumper horse development and competition success.

Proper footing prevents injuries, improves traction, and enhances a horse’s performance. Our rain-proof footing ensures safe riding conditions year-round.
